My name is George Allan. On November 12,1992 I moved from North Carolina to Columbus, Ohio in search of a better life. Things were hard back at home, the bottom dropped out of the economy...factories were shutting down left and right.
I got laid-off...so I tried my hand at installing carpet but, people didn't have any money for home improvement. They were barely making ends meet themselves.
I didn't know what I was going to do...I read in the newspaper how the economy in Ohio was BOOMING...so I headed North.
I landed a job at a Major Grocery store chain here in Columbus. The Manager and I hit it off right away. Because of my experience and background in dealing with people. He promised me a management position with the store.
But since I didn't have any retail experience he hired me as a BagBoy to get my feet wet. I was 42 Years old at the time.
Let's face it...I was broke, desparate and I needed to pay my rent so I took the job. My pay was $6.00 an hour. as fate would have it the manager left the store, in less than 3 weeks. And he was replaced by my new "Twenty Something" years old Boss.
It's no big secret after I told him about the arrangement me and the other manager talked about...He showed me Who was in Charge. He had me stocking shelves on the dog food aisle. And add insult to injury...He said "Be happy you have a JOB"
I got the short end of the stick...But I turned the tables on him...
